Is it okay if I only get my essays reviewed and not take additional help from a counsellor for other application materials? The course I want to do requires me to make a portfolio, which is already being handled. So I have to prepare all the documents required for admission, except a portfolio.

After your grades and test scores, your essay is probably the next most important part of your application. It is your opportunity to show your creativity, writing skills and of course, most importantly, your personality and what makes you a good fit for the university. I think taking help and advice on the essay is a good idea!

Speaking as a college counselor, I like to think there is value to having a counselor or someone with an understanding of the admissions process review all parts of an application! But if this is not possible, yes, of course, you can do a good job yourself. In fact, most students do not get outside help. If you only get help on your essays, please make sure that you do a complete job of your Activity Grid, showing the depth of your involvement and your leadership in all activities.  Make sure also that you pay as much attention to your supplementary essays as you do to your main essay, and make sure that you tell about different parts of yourself in each essay and do not merely repeat what can be gleaned from your activity grid and main essay. It takes some time and effort to craft an application that all fits together and shows you in the best light, but with thought and time, you can most likely do it yourself. Please follow up with any additional questions about specific parts of the application you may be concerned with and I will help you as much as I can.
